Source Water Protection Committee

The 1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act require that States complete source water assessments for all public drinking water systems. The source water assessment for the City of Ashland Water Utility, published in 2003, recommended the protection begin with the formation of a team composed of local, regional, and state members to more completely assess impacts to source water, and implement best management practices to prevent source water contamination.

Some areas studied are runoff from urban areas and construction sites, livestock related activities, and cropland runoff.

Strategy

The City Administrator, Public Works Director, and Utility Superintendent have met to develop a strategy on how best to move forward with the creation of a Source Water Protection Committee. It was agreed that it would be best to meet with Wisconsin Rural Water Association to discuss the next step to move forward with the development of a plan.
